New research shows that child-care centers can actually be good for children. An ongoing study by the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development shows that kids in high quality center-based care outperform those in all other kinds of high quality care. They excel in language development and cognitive skills like problem solving and reasoning. They also tend to have fewer behavioral problems and do well in social and emotional development. The line between education and caregiving is blurring. Where wealthy families once used nannies, they now choose child-care centers where children can learn and socialize. The Families and Work Institute says it's not that hard to find a high quality center. Education of day care workers is important, but it's more important that a caregiver be responsible and take the job seriously.
