Vacationing with your teenager?

You could survive it and maybe enjoy it
The kids are growing up. Now you have an uneasy feeling that this year's vacation might be the last the family takes together. But how enjoyable will it be with that often testy teen on board?
Here are some tips by experts: the AAA Hoosier Motor Club, Purdue University, a travel writer, a mother ... and a teenager.
* Include your teen in planning the vacation.
* Plan early so everyone knows when you will go and that they shouldn't make other commitments for that period of time.
* Pick a vacation spot that has a variety of activities for all ages within walking distance.
* Let the teen invite a friend along.
* Consider a trip to see relatives who also have teenagers.
* Make it clear that everyone will have to compromise. You can hit the amusement park one day, the museum the next. Decide that whatever you do, you'll have fun.
* Consider renting a van for a long car trip so there will be plenty of room for everyone.
* Allow teens some freedom. Let them set up their own spot on the beach, for example, and arrange to get back together for dinner.
* Consider traveling with another family that has kids who are compatible with yours. This is especially helpful to single parents who can then trade off supervisory duties.
* Let the teenager do some of the driving. Or at least put him in charge of the map and navigation.
Don't be hurt if your teen doesn't want to travel with you right now. A vacation with another family or a school trip can provide travel experience and give you some peace.
